Hanuman:  Servant to the Lord

Hanuman was fathered by Pawan the wind god and Anjanie. When he was a small child he playfully swallowed the sun, such was his powers. So it was no surprise when he joined with Shri Ram in his quest to find Sita that he would be anything but successful.

Hanuman can make himself into any form great or small.  He was a minister for Sugreeva brother of Vali who usurped the throne from Sugreeva.  The Ramayan recites the beautifully how Hanuman dressed a Bramhin first met Shree Ram and Lakshman addressing them a most learned one without knowing them (How do we address strangers).  Hanuman flew over the ocean and arrived in Lanka where he searched for Sita most of the night , finally finding her in the the "Asoka" garden he gave her the ring Shree Ram gave him to give her. Taking a ring from Sita and assuring her that the time of liberation is near Hanuman the let himself be captured so that he can come face to face with Ravan the asura and let him know that is doom is sealed.  Furious Ravan ordered that Hanuman's tail be wrapped with oil soaked rags and set afire.  As the asuras wrapped his tail with the rags he grew bigger and they kept on adding more rags, finally when they set his tail on fire Hanuman jumped atop the buildings and shook his tail sending sparks all around Lanka burning it .  Then he flew over the ocean again and rejoined his army and then they went and give the good news to Shree Ram and Lakshman.

He is also well known for lifting up the top of Mt Kailash and bringing it to the battlefield so that the Bear  king can take the Sajeevan weed and revive Lakshman.  Another mountain Hanuman lifted was the Govardan mountain which he brought to help build the bridge across the ocean, when he was told that no more materials were needed he put the mountain down and assured the deity of the mountain that Shree Ram will take form as Shee Krishna and arranged it that the deity Govardan will be worshipped.  Today people still do Govardan Puja.
